Health and Safety policy

Man and Van Docklands Health and Safety Policy

Man and Van Docklands is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for our employees, customers, contractors and members of the public who may be affected by our removal and transport activities. This policy outlines our approach to managing health and safety during residential and commercial moves, including packing, loading, transportation and unloading of goods.

Our Health and Safety Commitment

We aim to prevent injury, ill health and damage to property by planning and carrying out all moving and delivery work in a safe and responsible way. Management accepts overall responsibility for health and safety performance and requires all employees to cooperate and take reasonable care of their own safety and the safety of others.

Man and Van Docklands will regularly review this policy to ensure that it remains suitable and effective for the services we provide.

Responsibilities

Management is responsible for implementing this policy, providing suitable resources and ensuring that staff are adequately trained and supervised. This includes assessing risks, setting safe working procedures and monitoring compliance.

Employees have a duty to follow safety instructions, use equipment correctly and report any hazards, incidents or near misses as soon as they occur. Staff must not misuse any equipment provided for health and safety purposes and must cooperate fully with training and safety briefings.

Customers are requested to support safe working practices by providing clear access, informing us of any known hazards at the premises and following reasonable safety instructions given by our team on site.

Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices

Before commencing any removal work, our team will consider the risks associated with the property, access routes, parking arrangements and the nature of the items being moved. Where necessary, a more detailed risk assessment will be carried out to identify significant hazards and agree control measures.

Typical control measures for our man and van and removal services include planning safe lifting routes, using appropriate lifting techniques and equipment, securing loads correctly in our vehicles and maintaining good housekeeping around entrances, driveways and loading areas.

Manual Handling and Lifting

Manual handling is a core part of our removal operations and will be managed carefully to minimise the risk of injury. Staff receive guidance on safe lifting techniques, including assessing the weight and shape of items, avoiding twisting movements, lifting as a team when needed and using trolleys or other aids where appropriate.

Heavy, bulky or awkward items will be assessed individually. If an item cannot be moved safely with the available team, we will rearrange the work or use additional resources rather than compromise safety.

Use of Vehicles and Driving Safety

Our vehicles are maintained in a roadworthy condition and checked regularly. Drivers must hold the correct licence, follow road traffic laws and operate vehicles with care and consideration for other road users and pedestrians.

Loads are to be evenly distributed and properly secured to prevent movement during transit. Drivers are responsible for conducting basic vehicle checks before each journey, including tyres, lights and securing mechanisms. Fatigue management, safe speeds and adherence to parking rules form part of our driving safety expectations.

Slips, Trips and Falls

Slips, trips and falls are common risks during removals, especially when carrying items through narrow corridors, staircases and external paths. Our teams will keep work areas as clear as possible, avoid trailing cables, use suitable footwear and take extra care in wet or icy conditions.

Customers will be advised where temporary restrictions are needed, such as keeping walkways clear of personal belongings and ensuring that children and pets are kept away from active loading areas.

Equipment, Tools and Personal Protective Equipment

Man and Van Docklands provides suitable equipment including trolleys, straps and blankets to support safe handling and transport. All equipment must be used in line with instructions and removed from service if damaged or unsafe.

Where necessary, personal protective equipment such as gloves or high-visibility garments will be provided. Employees must use any equipment or protective clothing issued to them and report any defects immediately.

Customer Premises and Property Protection

We take reasonable steps to protect customer property and premises from damage during removal activities. This includes using protective coverings where appropriate, planning safe routes for large items and avoiding unnecessary contact with walls, doors and fixtures.

If any damage or incident occurs, it should be reported to the team leader on site as soon as it is noticed so that appropriate action can be taken.

Training, Information and Supervision

All staff receive appropriate information and guidance relevant to their role, including manual handling practices, safe driving expectations, emergency procedures and company health and safety rules. New starters are supervised until they are competent to work safely on their own or as part of a team.

We will update training and instructions when work procedures change or when improvements to safety practices are identified.

Accidents, Incidents and Emergency Procedures

All accidents, incidents and near misses must be reported without delay to the responsible person. This information is used to investigate causes, record outcomes and improve future safety controls.

Our staff are briefed on emergency procedures related to fire, first aid and vehicle breakdowns. In the event of serious incidents, work will be stopped and the area made safe before continuing operations.

Continuous Improvement

Man and Van Docklands is committed to continuous improvement in health and safety performance. We will monitor our work activities, gather feedback from staff and customers and update our procedures when better methods or controls are identified.

By working together, we aim to ensure that every removal and transport service is carried out with care, professionalism and due regard for the safety of everyone involved.
